Accident Prevention

3 Steps To Building A Great Safety Culture

The idea of safety is misconstrued on a daily basis as a “Have To”, “How To” or “Learn To” idea. We’re constantly reminded of the proper procedures to follow in order to do things the safe way whether at home or at work. Despite these reminders of how to be safe, in order to see significant change in safety, it requires a mindset and culture built around the concept of Safety. Here are three steps towards establishing a great safety culture.

Address The “Why” of Safety.

The most important piece of workplace safety is the attitude employees have toward the concept. Most of us are aware of the hazards that life offers and understand the direct reason to be safe: to not get hurt. What many of us fail to fully grasp is the indirect consequence of neglecting safety – the effect on our family. Reminding employees of who is most important in their lives is a crucial step in changing attitudes toward safety.

Cut Out The Shortcuts

We all take shortcuts in all areas of our lives. An important pillar of a healthy safety culture is the understanding that shortcuts never offer a reward that is worth the risk. Studying the reasoning for shortcuts and discussing the different effects they can have on our lives at work and at home is essential in removing them from our everyday activities.

Train, Remind, Repeat

Great safety cultures take time, persistence, and continual effort to create and maintain. FDRsafety has changed over 500,000 attitudes through our Attitude Based Safety Culture Training. This one-of-a-kind course takes individuals away from the technical teachings of safety and explores the psychology of why safety is a 24/7 mindset.
