Safety Culture Exercise: Improving Attitudes Towards Safety

Creating an effective Safety Culture is something we at FDRsafety preach daily to our clients, partners, friends, and family. Through our decades of experience, we have learned that an Effective Safety Culture is something that is developed through individuals buying into the idea that safety is THE TOP VALUE at home and work.

In an effort to help you improve your Safety Culture, here is an exercise to try with your coworkers and employees:

Question One: What are the names of the people in life you care about the most?

Often times our mindset when we walk into the office or jobsite is to do whatever it takes to get the job done. In an attempt to be “more focused on work” we’ll block out the other responsibilities in our lives. Remind yourself and your employees what’s really important in life.

Question Two: Tell us/me a story that best demonstrates what makes those individuals special.

Show your coworkers and employees that you understand the importance of family by initiating a conversation about theirs.

Question Three: What do you hope to provide your family by working here?

Everyone works in large part to support themselves and family financially. Whether it is a home, children, spouse, a wedding, or college tuition, every employee has a reason or reasons for showing up to work every day. Encourage your coworkers and employees to think about their reason.

Question Four: If you get hurt while taking a shortcut for the sake of time or comfort, how are you going to accomplish your goals?

This is a question that every employee for every company at every job should ask every day. Safety has been long thought of and approached as a “how to” subject, when it actuality it is far more a “why” subject. Why do you want to be safe? Learning and following procedures is not to be dismissed, but understanding why they are in place is the difference in employees just following safety rules versus creating an Effective Safety Culture.

FDRsafety’s Safety Culture Training has impacted over 500,000 members of our nation’s workforce by focusing on “The Why” of Safety. Our Experts motivate workers to want to be safe, and improves safety performance throughout organizations. For more information please contact Flavius Brown – Vice President at FDRsafety.
