Developing A Safety Culture In Multi-Employer Worksites

March 2018 – Foxconn Technology Group confirmed Tuesday that is has selected Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Co. and a German-based company, M+W Group to serve as the lead contractors to build its $10 billion Mount Pleasant complex…The project, which could create 10,000 direct construction jobs, is expected to begin within 60 days.

Known as Multi-Employer Worksites, projects of this size often include employees from companies specializing in concrete, steel erection, mechanics, and electric working side by side. This is an efficient and necessary approach, but it doesn’t come without challenges. One of these challenges revolves around workplace safety.

In Multi-Employer Worksites, safety practices can differ depending on the trade and the individual. This isn’t necessarily a problem due to the fact that different trades require different equipment and procedures in order to safely perform their specific duties. The safety procedures followed by an electrician differ greatly from those followed by a steel erector. This is not the problem.

The problems can arise when these individuals coexist in the same working area, adding more complexity to their individual safety practices.  Moments like these are exactly why a strong Safety Culture must be present in projects of such size.  Here are a few ways to start implementing a strong Safety Culture in Multi-Employer Projects.

Start Every Day With A Safety Message

Take a lesson from the Las Vegas Raiders Stadium Project.  Addressing your entire workforce prior to the start of the day is an effective and important way to put safety in the forefront.

Remind Coworkers Why They Should Be Safe

Throughout the day, remind your coworkers of the reasons they should want to work safe.  Take the time to discuss family and friends, and why the most important part of any day is returning home to those you love.

FDRsafety’s Safety Culture Training has impacted over 500,000 members of our nation’s workforce by focusing on “The Why” of Safety. Our Experts motivate workers to want to be safe, and improves safety performance throughout organizations. For more information please contact Flavius Brown – Vice President at FDRsafety.
