5 Safety Tips Before Driving In The Snow

As we approach the heart of winter, many areas of our country have already caught the wrath of cold temperatures, snow showers, and for some, a bomb cyclone. Whether you’re in the Northwest or Southeast, chances are your family members will be forced to “brave the elements” in the upcoming weeks and drive in inclement weather. Prior to letting them on the road, turn on your mom or dad voice and pester them with the (important) following questions and safety tips before driving in the snow:

1. “Do you have blankets and water?”

While rare, you and your family should always be prepared for the chance of a family member becoming stranded in inclement weather. One of the first steps in preparation is to ensure that they have plenty of water and sources of heat in their car. Keeping a case of water and a few blankets in their trunk will go a long way in keeping them safe.

2. “Did you put gas in your tank?”

In addition to water and blankets, one of the best ways to combat being stranded is to make sure family members have plenty of gas in their car. A car with a half tank of gas can idle for over 24 hours, providing them with a source of heat in case of emergency.

3. “Did you clean your windshield wipers?”

This can be an afterthought for many but, having clean, functioning windshield wipers is vital when driving in snow and icy conditions. Faulty and unclean wipers can result in a smeared windshield and severely reduced visibility.

4. “Did you get rid of the snow on your car?”

You should never let a family member leave home without clearing their car of snow and ice. In addition to being illegal in many states, it is highly dangerous, with accumulated snow becoming projectiles for cars behind you. Make them take the time to clear their car off to help prevent the possibility of causing an accident.

5. “Where’s your scraper?”

Always keep a scraper in your family cars. It’s important not only for clearing their car prior to driving, but in the event of a breakdown,in order to keep their car clear of snow.
