No More Overlooking Work Zone Accidents

Last week we published a blog highlighting the dangers faced by teenagers while driving, specifically carpooling. An appropriate topic for the kick-off to what has become known as the 100 Deadliest Days. Thanks to overwhelming media coverage this phrase and the associated 3+ month time period have become a nationally recognized issue. While teenage accidents and deaths are undoubtedly important, they are not the only group at increased risk summer months. The number of work zone accidents are quite alarming as well.

Road-workers are a rarely appreciated, high chastised group of people who put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis. While ensuring that our roadways are safe and maintained, this group comes face to face with danger at an alarming rate. In a study recently published by the Associated General Contractors, work zones and those occupying them see an astounding amount of accidents.

This article and its statistics may not directly affect you in the same way an article about teenage drivers. It is still important to pay it the same level of attention. Not all of us have teenagers to worry about behind the wheel, but almost all of us will get behind the wheel this summer. And we will certainly drive through a work zone at some point. Rather than doing our best to get through them as quickly as possible, let’s pay these men and women the respect they deserve. It’s time to do our part in keeping them, as well as ourselves, safe and prevent work zone accidents.
