Truck, bus industries want quicker action on changes to CSA

While there may be a number of potential divisions between the government and the trucking industry, few seem as difficult as the reporting of crash history.

Those divisions are playing out as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration considers changes to its Compliance, Safety and Accountability program, better known as CSA. While some of the changes to the Safety Measurement System individual BASICS will take effect this December, the industry is most anxious to see quicker resolution of the crash history issue since it is clearly the most controversial and consequential CSA policy currently under review.

The FMCSA wants to ensure that its CSA program remains effective; the carrier industry wants its safety record to be portrayed accurately. While those goals are certainly not mutually exclusive, finding the right balance has been difficult and is a reason for the delays.
