In 2018 we have seen 18 mass shootings in the United States. Eighteen. The devastation and frustration of this epidemic has been brought to the forefront of our everyday lives and must be addressed. While we as citizens debate the necessary actions of our government, we as individuals need to do our part in making our homes and workplaces safe in the event that we find ourselves in a similar situation. As safety professionals, it is our duty to help you develop an action plan to prepare for an active shooter situation.

There are 4 crucial steps in preparing you, your family, and your coworkers for an active shooter situation.

  1. Learn to identify the sound of and react to gunshots.

Being able to distinguish a gunshot from other similar noises can be the difference in valuable time needed to begin your action plan.

  2. Prepare evacuation routes for getting out of a building or room.

Knowing your surroundings is vital in escaping an active shooter. Take the time to create, memorize, and share your strategy for evacuating your building or room.

  3. Study techniques for hiding and barricading doors.

In the event that you are unable to evacuate, you need to be prepared to hide and barricade any entrance the shooter could have into your location. There are a variety of different tactics on where to hide and how to use everyday items to barricade doors.

  4. Know best methods to use if encountered with the shooter.

If encountering the shooter, give yourself every advantage possible by learning the different techniques to distract and/or swarm the shooter. This is the first step in neutralizing the incident.
