Motivate workers to “want to” be safe

Teaching employees the techniques of working safely is one thing, motivating them to act on what they have learned is quite another.

FDRsafety has two speakers with proven track records at motivating improved worker safety decision-making. They are available to speak at your company or association meeting.

Fred RineFred Rine

Topic: Inspiring employees about safety — It’s about the ‘why’ as much as the ‘how’

Fred, who is CEO of FDRsafety, created a safety awareness training program that has been presented to more than 500,000 workers and managers around the country. The program helps workers understand “why” they should be safet – so they can return home to family and friends — rather than the “how” of safety techniques. Many companies credit the program for improving their safety performance.

Fred brings the insights gained from that program to a rousing presentation that will get your group thinking differently about safety.

For more about Fred’s philosophy on motivation, read his article “The Role of Driver Motivation.”

One driver said he would be retiring in five days.

“I don’t want to be here,” he said. “After 35 years on the road, I don’t need safety training.”

Fred began worrying the driver would cast a negative mood over the session with non-stop naysaying. But at the end he approached Fred, complimented him on the training, and said he planned a major change in his thinking.

He had never worn a seat belt in 35 years on the road. But he said he now realized why it was important. He planned to wear one in his remaining few days so that he would actually make it to retirement.[/bsf-info-box]

Topic: Creating a world-class safety program

There are countless reasons to create a world-class safety program: Workers want it, OSHA demands it and it saves money in the long run. It’s also the right thing to do.

The question is: how do you go about building this program?

There is no one more qualified to provide the answer than Jim Stanley, President of FDRsafety.

Jim started his safety career on the Philadelphia waterfront and then spent 25 years with OSHA, rising to Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, the No. 2 position in the agency. He went on to become Vice President of Health and Safety for AK Steel before assuming his current role.

In his plainspoken style, Jim offers audiences concrete advice for raising their safety programs to excellence and for making safety an integral part of company culture.
